Have you ever had that moment when you’re putting the wrong products all over yourself because you haven’t taken the time to do any research, and suddenly realize this actually could be hurting your skin and body? I put Ponds Cold Cream all over my face for a moisturizer and Vaseline Care Cream all over my neck and face when it’s just supposed to be for hands and arms. Yikes!
I am realizing I could be doing things to help myself feel invigorated and fresh, if I only took the time! This is the main problem society has…TIME. But as I have realized recently that forcing myself out of lazy habits benefits me to no end. So, let’s take the TIME to delve into our souls, our bodies a bit and reap the rewards. This is my New Year’s resolution, anyway.
I started with something simple to help show you that we can do little and sweet things to ourselves to help us reconnect with our nurturing side and stop and enjoy the moment. We don’t always need big gains, huge rewards to do things. SIMPLE is the key. I personally enjoyed most of all the smell of boiling and steeping rosemary in my kitchen and up against my nostrils. If I had a headache I could hangout in front of that stove all day long. I also can’t stop touching my face now because it’s so smooth. Guess what, it cost like .10 cents. Took a half hour and it was really fun.
I remember when I started hanging out with one of my life long friends. She opened the door one day with an oatmeal mask that was literally dropping gooey oat globs all over the floor (this doesn’t happen if you use just a little and let it dry a bit, LOL). She also had henna in her hair that was dropping henna everywhere, too and homemade scones in the oven for our race day. I have to say that I look back on my experiences with her and her family and realize how dang influential they were. So much of my life has been shaped by this family.
Using herbs for beauty is so essential. This oatmeal mask is wonderful for making smooth skin. Don’t forget a bowl of oatmeal a day keeps the doctor away and fiber helps us to stay full longer, so less snacking necessary. This simple recipe can substitute water for milk to make your face even smoother.
OATMEAL FACE MASK
(from the book: Magic and Medicine of Plants by: Reader’s Digest) Just a fun vintage book I found at a thrift store ages ago but I have to say, it’s a page turner and I use it all the time to research plants.
1/2 C boiling water
1 tsp. dried rosemary leaves
1 1/2 Tbsp. regular oatmeal (break it up into little particles)
1 Tbsp. almond meal
So, first you want to boil your water and pour it over the rosemary leaves. Let it steep for 10-15 minutes and then strain. I don’t mind texture so I left a little rosemary in the oats too. I also didn’t use the almonds and still had great results. You can use almond meal or just grind almonds to make fine granules. Take the time to hover over that pot of goodness and continue to smell the steeping rosemary, it’s so relaxing. A little peppermint can be added to help make a more stimulating mask – just sub out the rosemary for eucalyptus or peppermint.
Secondly, breakup the oats into fine particles and blend with the almonds. Then add your milk or water steeped with rosemary leaves, just enough to make a paste. Don’t just pour it all in. Mix the paste.
Thirdly, clean your face with a warm washcloth or steam it. Get a set of nice spa-like wash clothes to make the experience of pampering yourself extra sweet. This feels so good to do mid-day. I warmed my face and smelled the goodness in the pot and was already feeling uplifted.
Apply the mask, avoid eyes and lips. Use the excess for a face wash too, just keep it refrigerated. Spread a good layer all over your face. It will take 15 minutes to dry and then you can leave it on for a total of 30 minutes. Wash it off with a warm wash cloth and you will start feeling extra smooth. I noticed it more the next morning. Have fun with it and let me know if you like this one!!
